Research shows which nations have enjoyed the biggest investment returns since First World War

British investors have enjoyed highest returns in the world since First World War but they would have made even more if they had widened their horizons and invested globally. This is the conclusion of research, conducted for The Telegraph, that analysed a vast amount of stock market data spanning the world’s major economies over the past century.

Since 1914, the average investor in British shares has made a return of 5.7pc a year in “real” terms, after allowing for inflation. This is a healthy figure, and among the best shown on the map illustrating the returns for 20 of the world’s leading markets. But an investor who split his or her portfolio equally among each of the 20 countries would have made annual returns of 6.9pc after inflation, according to the research, which was carried out by Patrick O’Shaughnessy of O’Shaughnessy Asset Management, an American investment company, using exhaustive stock market data compiled by Elroy Dimson, Paul Marsh and Mike Staunton of the London Business School.

Only one country’s stock market has failed to deliver a positive real return since 1914 – Austrian investors who stuck to their home market made an average annual loss of 0.63pc.

The idea of selling your car online is a great one. It's super convenient and it puts you into contact with a much broader variety of people. Still, there are inherent risks with this because the people on the other side of the ad are strangers. A few people have been killed because the people saying they were interested in their vehicles for sale were actually con artists and criminals.

These incidents are extremely rare and shouldn't put you off from trying to sell your car online in general. However, it does show you need to be careful about how you go about placing an ad and about whom you agree to meet.

First of all, don't agree to meet just anybody. Be selective and do your research on people before you agree to meet them. Ask a ton of questions about them that only a person legitimately interested in buying your car would ask. Try to have a real conversation. Usually, this can tell you a lot about a person and whether or not they're for real.

Try to keep your head about you. That is, even though you're excited to have a prospective buyer on the phone, don't let that fact alone sway you. Stay alert at all times. They may say something that tips you off to their true intentions and you'll need to be aware to catch it.

If they seem to be on the up and up, agree to meet in a public place. There should be plenty of other people around so that you're not alone. Don't ever meet at your home or in an abandoned lot or anything like that.

Another good way to protect yourself is to bring someone along with you. Having someone with you greatly reduces the risk of being harmed. If the prospective buyer is a fraud, they'll likely bail at the sight of a second person on site.

If something doesn't feel right about the transaction, don't go through with it. If a person makes you uncomfortable, don't pursue it. If the idea of selling your car and meeting individual buyers really makes you uncomfortable, it may be best to hire an auto broker to complete it for you. They charge a fee, but it may be worth it to preserve your safety. The old adage "trust your gut" plays a primary role here.

Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) announced that Lt. Gen. Samuel D. Cox will serve as chairman of the exchange’s board of directors effective immediately. Cox was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services and will replace Lt. Gen. Darrell Jones, who served as chairman of the Exchange board of directors since April 2013 and retired from the Air Force on Nov. 21. Big Lots has appointed Richard Chene as Exec VP, Chief Merchandising Officer.  Chene will oversee all merchandising and global sourcing strategies and execution, including the development and attraction of talent for the organization.

Big Lots has added three general merchandise managers as the company continues realigning the merchandising organization into three customer-centric categories: food and consumables, furniture and home décor and seasonal, toys and electronics.  Trey Johnson was promoted to Senior VP, GMM for Food and Consumables.  Martha Withers was hired as Senior VP, GMM for Furniture and Home Décor. Lucy Cindric was hired as Senior VP, GMM for Seasonal, Toys and Electronics.

Family Dollar Stores, Inc. announced that Jeffrey W. Macak, Exec VP Supply Chain, has resigned from the Company for personal reasons. The Company intends to conduct a search for Mr. Macak’s replacement. Hallmark announced that Bryan Williamson has joined the company as VP, GM of Hallmark Omnichannel. Office Depot’s new Chairman and CEO Roland Smith, of the recently combined Office Depot and OfficeMax companies now called Office Depot, named Stephen Hare as Exec VP, CFO. Hare replaces co-CFO Mike Newman, who has retired from the company after five years.

Office Depot continued activities as the company, which resulted from the merger of Office Depot and OfficeMax, laid groundwork for growth in 2014 by identifying some key leaders. A little more than one month after Roland Smith was named chairman and CEO of Office Depot and one week after choosing Boca Raton, Fla., as the merged company’s headquarters, Smith announced a slate of senior executive positions that touch every aspect of the company along with several roles that are yet to be filled.

Key positions such as President of North America, Exec VP of Retail, Exec VP of e-commerce and Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, have yet to be filled, but Smith did announce the following moves:

Steve Schmidt will serve as President of International to be based in Europe with responsibility for Europe, Asia, New Zealand, Australia and Mexico. However, plans call for him to be based in Florida until the company fills the role in Europe.

2. Michael Allison was named Exec VP and Chief People Officer
3. Elisa Garcia was named Exec VP and Chief Legal Officer.

7. Larry Hartley was named Senior VP of Supply Chain.
8. Rob Koch will serve as Senior VP of Real Estate.
9. Todd Hales will serve as Senior VP and Global Chief Information Officer.
10. To make sure the integration of Office Depot and OfficeMax goes smoothly, Deb O’Connor was named Senior VP of Integration.
